Has the US consumer become a much bigger saver?

I still don’t buy the notion that Americans have permanently and drastically altered their savings habits.  Although it is bouncing around, the savings rate seems to have reset, but probably not at a dramatically higher level.  We may not get near zero again for a long time if ever, but we won’t be saving more than a few percent going forward.  The consumer psyche remains largely set in its ways.
